Brief Biography
BURNETT, W(illiam) R(iley). Also wrote as John Monahan; James Updyke. American. Born in Springfield, Ohio, 25 November 1899. Educated at Miami Military Institute, German-town, Ohio; Ohio State University, Columbus, 1919-20. Married Whitney Forbes Johnston in 1943 (second wife); two sons. Statistician, State of Ohio. 1921-27; full-time writer from 1927. Recipient: O. Henry Memorial Award. 1930; Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award, for screenplay, 1951, and Grand Master Award. 1980; Writers Guild of America award, for screenplay, 1963. Died 25 April 1982.
