Some background information on G.D.H. Cole and Margaret Cole
G. D. H. Cole, (he only son of a surveyor and estate agent, took 10 books and writing from his schooldays at St. Paul’s. After his Oxford days he taught philosophy at Durham University, and then, first, economies and later, politics at Oxford, where he is now Professor of Social and Political Theory, Fellow of All Souls and Nuffield Colleges, and Hon.
Fellow of University College. He is also Chairman of the Fabian Society. His first book, The World of Labour, brought him instantly into the rank of writers who must be noticed. Among his numerous books on politics and economics are Practical Economies. Persons and Periods (both of which have been published as Pelicans), The Intelligent Alon’s Guide to [he Post-war World, a life of William Cobbett. and many others.
Margaret Cole is the daughter of J. P. Post gate, Classical professor and grammarian, inventor of the ‘new’ pronunciation of Latin. She was a. classical scholar at Glrton, also part-educator of five younger brothers and sisters. A journalist by instinct—her first serial was written when seven—she became a book writer by force of circumstances. Her partnership with G. D. H. Cole was initiated in 1918 after eighteen months’ association in Socialist research. She has also done much work in the Fabian Society and In adult education in London and elsewhere.
The Coles have one son, two daughters.
