Walter Mosley, born 1953 in Los Angeles, America. He is, quite rightly, regarded as a classic author in this genre. His main series character is Easy Rawlins, superbly portrayed by Denzil Washington in the movie Devil in a Blue Dress. The author has won prestigious awards on both sides of the Atlantic. It is very iunlikely that you are unfamiliar with his work, but if so, you really are missing something
