THE FIRST BULLET missed him. It sang over his head and smacked into the bushes that grew in a row along the stout wire fence. He halted, angry and incredulous, but not much frightened. Here in the long valley, with its flying fields and aircraft plants, the dim-out was strictly enforced. A wall of darkness stood between him and the man with the gun. If he kept still, if no betraying footsteps crunched on the sandy rubble or set the dry grasses rustling, he was quite safe. He waited several minutes, until a 'plane rose from a near-by airfield. When the engines roared overhead, he began to run. The laboratory was not far away, though he saw it only as a shadow among lesser shadows, an angular black line against the sky.
Eastward across the valley, dawn was scratching a grey pencil along the rim of the mountains. Somewhere in the darkness a bird stirred and whimpered in its sleep. He moved on beside the wall. The rough brick raked his fingers. Then he felt the cold smoothness of glass. He stopped at the blacked-out window and called in a low voice: |
