Recollections of a Detective Police Officer By "Waters" - The 2nd Ever Detective Fiction Book!!!
1856 UK hardback first edition published by J.C. Brown in London
Queen's Quorum #2 - preceded only by Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue in the origins of crime/mystery and detective fiction
A VG book, solid early functional binding, light tan here and there, text block cleaner than many 20 year old UK modern firsts!!
The book is the 1856 first edition, rebound as most were, that weren't discarded of course
As a bones this also has Recollections of a Detective Police Officer Second Series bound in, a volume of the same size and format
This is the 1859 first edition, prefaced with:
"The flattering reception of Recollections of a Detective Police Officer has induced me to write a second volume which I hope will be as fortunate as the first"
The second volume is, in fact, rarer than the first I believe!
Most of the books around this period were rebound, original binding in this case would mean a price of £1,000s so a hugely viable prospect here

A true cornerstone for any collection, one of the most important books in the genre and I would suggest a bargain, especially as the second series first edition book is not "priced in"
The only one I've handled and a book I've owned for many years

The dust jacket has some general shelf wear to edges, stunning artwork by Pollack (did he ever produce a dull jacket?)
Hard to realistically imagine a nicer copy in the real world
If I were to start collecting again I'd collect Museum Press crime fiction titles as many collect Collins Crime Club

A 1950s murder mystery with a wonderfully evocative dust jacket

A Few Words
I shall be adding some crime fiction books to this page by some of the more obscure authors.
Names which you may not search for but books that once seen would happily grace your shelves.
There will be an emphasis on great dust jackets for which the genre is renowned.
Some of the books will be, I'm sure, undiscovered pseudonyms, again something renowned in the mystery fiction genre
Many of the authors who only appear to have written one book have indeed written many under other, often famous, names.

I hope you'll find something on this page one day that will catch your eye.
