HILLERMAN, Tony. American. Born in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma, 27 May 1925. Raised among Pottawatomie and Sem-inole Indians; attended Indian boarding school for eight years; Oklahoma State University, Stillwater; University of Oklahoma, Norman, B.A. in journalism 1948; University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, M. A. in English 1965. Served in the United States Army Infantry during World War II: Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart. Married Marie E. Unzner in 1948; three daughters and three sons. Reporter, News Herald, Borger, Texas, 1948; News Editor, Morning Press, 1949, and City Editor, Constitution, 1950, Lawton, Oklahoma; Political Reporter, United Press, Oklahoma City. 1952; Bureau Manager, United Press, Santa Fe. New Mexico. 1953; Executive Editor, The New Mexican, Santa Fe. 1954. Associate Professor 1965-66, since 1966. Professor of Journalism and Chairman of Department, and since 1975, Assistant to the President. University of New Mexico. Recipient: Burrows Award, for journalism; Shaffer Award, for reporting, 1952; Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award, 1974
