Synopsis THE SHETLANDS have been called 'the isles of nightless I summer as indeed they are. They possess a fascination all their own; being utterly unspoilt, with magnificent scenery. The inhabitants live in a different world from the people on the mainland of Britain. Their habits, customs, and mode of life are dissimilar. They live in rugged, treeless surroundings—more or less at the mercy of the elements. Taffrail's new novel is a 'thriller' in this new setting. It is a tale of some people from the South going to ihe Shetlands to fish. They do fish; but are mixed up with spies, a submarine or two, and a plot to seize the island when 'zero hour' comes. There are some pretty wild doings, with a fast motor boat, some aeroplanes, and chases afloat and ashore

A darned Pretty scheme, I must say! snorted Butterton from the depths of his armchair, eyeing the tall man leaning against the mantelpiece over the lenses of his horn-rimmed glasses. " It's gun-running, no less ! " He puffed out his pink cheeks, and proceeded noisily to blow his nose with a florid silk handkerchief— no doubt as a sign of indignation. He was fiftyish, fat and short, rather like a rotund little barrel on absurdly short legs. He possessed a shiny bald poll, three chins, and rolls of fat at the back of his collar—a well-dressed, comfortable, prosperous-looking citizen accustomed to good living. " Yes," Gonnon agreed from the chair on the other side of the small table, with its tray and decanter of whisky, syphon, glasses and plate of sandwiches. " And what'11 we get for footing the bill ?—five years, seven years, not even in the second division. It's ludicrous, crack-brained ! "

Connon was the direct antithesis of Butterton— tallish, scraggy, harassed-looking and untidily dressed, careless about his personal appearance. The waistcoat of his grey lounge suit was spotted. His trousers sadly needed pressing. Norwell, the thin man in the double-breasted dinner jacket with his back to the fire, shrugged his shoulders and laughed pleasantly. It was not difficult to guess his calling.
