When the Rich buy the Beautiful they like to be sure they get value for money. Did Eugene Galmart (1850-1922) paint 'Child in Spring', or is it a fake? Nicolas Brent is commissioned to find the answer. In Paris he finds that the dealers and the experts, the rich collectors and the poor who remember Galmart's friends, all have something to make, and something to lose. Some losers die, some of the rich become richer. Love, murder and conspiracy make a strange contrast with the portrait of a child beneath a magnolia tree, an innocence which seems remote from the idea of an inflation hedge, from the brutality of violence. The conclusion is a savage comment on the accountancy of aesthetics. |
