Married 1) Marion Holcombe;2) Eleanor Alexander in 1964; one daughter. Copywriter, Gustav Marx Advertising Agency, Milwaukee, 1943-53. Editor, Science-Fiction World, New York, 1956. President, Mystery Writers of America, 1970-71. Recipient: Evans Memorial Award, 1959; Hugo Award, 1959; Ann Radcliffe Award, 1960, 1966; Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award, 1960; Trieste Film Festival Award, 1965; Convention du Cinema Fantastique de Paris Prize, 1973; World Fantasy Convention Award, 1975. Guest of Honor, World Science Fiction Convention, 1948, 1973; World Fantasy Convention, 1975; Bouchercon I, 1971.
