Educated at the Grammar School, Carlisle, Cumberland, 1947-55; St. Catherine's College, Oxford, 1957-60, B.A. (honours) in English 1960. Served in the Border Regiment, British Army, 1955-57. Married Patricia Ruell in I960. Student Officer, British Council. Edinburgh. 1960-61; Schoolmaster, Essex. 1962-67.Since 1967, Lecturer. Doncaster College of Education, Yorkshire
