DC Clement was well pleased with his latest commission from Superintendent Kleever. The young DC had suggested a list of ingenious pretexts that would have justified his presence outside his DFs house and had been disappointed to be told that it would not matter if he were seen. His only purpose in being there was to safeguard Mrs Mitchell, and if her tormentor knew he was being watched then SCL much the better. Clement remembered Virginia as one of the few bright spots in the superintendent's ghastly party and was of the opinion that she was well worth watching. Her dress had covered what a good many other female guests had unwisely revealed and the mystery had been more intriguing than the displays. Besides, she had been kind to him when most other guests had taken his reserve for rudeness.
