Synopsis
Mark did not really enjoy recording sessions. After the first take of the day, the arduous repetitions of the music seemed to diminish its mystical qualities to a craggy search for right notes and clean ensemble playing, but he was eager to hear how the violinist would acquit himself. He had recently agreed to manage the young man, and had only had the opportunity to hear him at two concerts with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. He had been very impressive, but the demands of a recording session, with its time-watching tensions and technical perfections, created special conditions under which to make music. Mark had worked for some years with Konstantin Steigel, inured to the old maestro's predictable fits of temperament. He was accustomed to the goldfish bowl environment of a recording studio. If nothing else, Konstantin would steer Herman through a thoughtful and well-balanced reading.
