Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn
Physically tough, Roderick Alleyn is a good man to have nearby in moments of danger. He is intelligent, perceptive, and cultured enough to appreciate and discuss the theatre, art, and music. He can move about quite easily in social circles with friends like Lord Robert "Bunchy" Gospell. The man who chronicles Alleyn's adventures is Nigel Bathgate, a journalist.
Alleyn does not look like a typical policeman and would, in fact, "do" very nicely at any social gathering. This should be no surprise, since his mother, Lady Alleyn, is prominent in British social circles. He is tall and lean, has dark hair and gray eyes with corners that turn down. He is a serious man, not given to smiling easily. Nonetheless, he is handsome and his deep voice and lean, long-fingered hands impress women meeting their first policeman.
He remains detached in most of his cases, though he is decidedly human. He becomes emotionally involved when one of his friends is murdered. His involvement takes the form of love when, during one case, he meets the attractive and famous portrait painter, Agatha Troy, whom he later marries. The Alleyns are to be separated for more than 3.5 years during World War II, due to Roderick's assignment to New Zealand. Their meeting, on his return, is poignant.
Nigel Bathgate, a young journalist on the "London Clarion," is invited to a house party where he renews his acquaintance with the vivacious Angela North. Angela, a bit wild, scares Nigel by driving a car recklessly but, nonetheless, intrigues him. They ultimately get married. Murder occurs during the weekend, and Bathgate meets the Scotland Yard Inspector sent to investigate, Roderick Alleyn*. Bathgate is an in-
genuous, robust young man with a reddish face, brushed-up mustache, and a neatly barbered look. He becomes Alleyn's good friend and chronicles his adventures.
