Synopsis
The problems of one Tiberius Bixby started when the guy with the purple tie got his throat slit in the ladies's bathroom on a Long Island train station. And mixed in the bloody puzzle were : The beauty in the red hat who suspiciously hid her knowledge of a deceased man ; The blonde bombshell Paula, who had a party because her dad was mysteriously burned alive; Nicky Pet and the female dentist ; a Ghurka knife and the mysterious shout from the dead man's wife— all mixed in a haze of alcohol and murder. What have all these to do with silk ? The answer was found by eccentric old Pa Bixby, who, at the age of seventy, was still able to appreciate a well-filled stocking as he mixed his whisky with philosophy.

A very rare book in jacket, with wrap round band incredibly so . . . and of course artwork by the fabulous Bip Pares - Bargain !!

Mike Teagle Murders in Silk Sample
THE first thing I noticed about the girl in the red calot was that she was an independent wench. She wore sheer black stockings and ignored the mirrors along the passageway to the Long Island Railroad level of the Pennsylvania Station. I noticed these circumstances with approval, especially the stockings. I still didn't know why I was there, though, so I ambled over to the information desk. Maybe the Long Island Railroad could tell me.
"What day is it?" I said.
The young man behind the desk seemed to have sudden trouble with his adenoids. He deliberated the question at length before committing himself.
"Monday," he said.
"I mean, is it by any chance the thirteenth of June ?"
"Yes, mister," he said. He seemed to be pained about something. He said confidentially, "It's 1939, too."
"Thanks, but I know what year it is."
He looked as though he doubted it, but I didn't make anything of it. A lot of people doubted us Bixbys knew what year it was. Pa says sometimes he does, too
