Leo Bruce - The Characters
Sergeant Beef
The burly, red-faced Sergeant William Beef is a lackadaisical but remarkably astute village policeman who solved a number of intriguing cases in the late 1930's. After several successes, he retired from the force to return as a private inquiry agent. In his first case he matched wits with thinly-disguised versions of Father Brown, Lord Peter Wimsey, and Hercule Poirot, and outwitted them all.
