About this Book
Vera Creighton feared her husband as much as she loved her stepdaughter, Annice. But here in Paris, tucked away in a tiny apartment, she felt safe. Surely he could not find them now. She lost any semblance of security, however, when she saw her husband. Maurice in front of the Trocadero Cafe. Praying that he had not seen her, she forced herself to walk quietly away, then fled to her apartment to get Annice. They had to get away . . . and there was an obscure hotel set high in the Swiss Alps that might serve as a hiding place. Vera was ready to leave when she heard the knock. There was no doubt in her mind that it was Maurice-the man whose evil dominance had driven her half .around the world. He strode in and demanded the child. It was then thai Vera struck out blindly and fled with the child, leaving the body of her husband there in the room. But Vera was to know no calm, no sanity, no safety, for murder dogged her flight from Paris, and her mountain haven became a rendezvous for death.

A nice clean copy of a very rare book indeed, offered at a trade price

About this Book
After several stories of high intrigue in Latin-American locales, the author reverts to Penberthy Island, off Cape Cod, and brings back that wise and laconic detective Elisha Macomber. Marcy Tracy, librarian and ex-schoolteacher, was uneasy as she watched the gaiety and high spirits at the welcome-home party for the three young servicemen, for she felt that beneath the festive surface, trouble was brewing. The next morning she discovered a murder, committed with a blunt instrument which she could identify but could not find. The killer was to strike again before Elisha and Marcy succeeded in sifting the true clues from the false, and, having done so, they had to move fast to prevent yet another murder. The salty dialogue and New England background of this new mystery will delight readers who have been waiting for another of those colourful stories in which Elisha figures.

WHEN I pushed open the living-room door of the Turkey Hill cottage that lovely spring morning and saw Alyse Marsh lying dead on the floor, many things which had happened in the previous few days suddenly took on importance— petty, spiteful things, many of them. There were others more disturbing—evidences of real malevolence and a brooding, calculating hate. And Alyse was concerned in them all, like a focus of infection in a healthy body. It seemed dreadful to have such thoughts about one of my neighbours, but as I stood looking down at her with horrified eyes, my first rational thought was that, whoever might ultimately pay the penalty of the law for Alyse Marsh's death, it was Alyse herself who was responsible for it. It all began the day the Big Three, as they were affectionately known on Penberthy Island, came back from the war. Most of our boys, naturally, are in the Navy; these three, Tad, Persh, and Pudgy, went into the Army. Their company was sent to Iceland with the first contingent, and there they stayed until they were transferred to England, just in time for D-Day. They were the first to get home after V-E Day, and of course the whole island turned out to give them a rousing welcome. Written by author Kathleen Moore Knight
