WHEN I pushed open the living-room door of the Turkey Hill cottage that lovely spring morning and saw Alyse Marsh lying dead on the floor, many things which had happened in the previous few days suddenly took on importance— petty, spiteful things, many of them. There were others more disturbing—evidences of real malevolence and a brooding, calculating hate. And Alyse was concerned in them all, like a focus of infection in a healthy body. It seemed dreadful to have such thoughts about one of my neighbours, but as I stood looking down at her with horrified eyes, my first rational thought was that, whoever might ultimately pay the penalty of the law for Alyse Marsh's death, it was Alyse herself who was responsible for it. It all began the day the Big Three, as they were affectionately known on Penberthy Island, came back from the war. Most of our boys, naturally, are in the Navy; these three, Tad, Persh, and Pudgy, went into the Army. Their company was sent to Iceland with the first contingent, and there they stayed until they were transferred to England, just in time for D-Day. They were the first to get home after V-E Day, and of course the whole island turned out to give them a rousing welcome. Written by author Kathleen Moore Knight |
