Founding Editor, Twentieth Century Verse, London, 1937-39; Reviewer, Manchester Evening News, 1947-56; Editor, Penguin Mystery Series, 1974-77. Since 1958, Reviewer for the Sunday. Times, London. Visiting Professor. Amherst College, Massachusetts, 1975-76. Co-Founder, 1953. and Chairman. 1958-59, Crime Writers Association; Chairman. Committee of Management. Society of Authors.! 969-71; Member of the Council. Westfield College, University of London. 1972-75. Since 1976, President, Detection Club. Recipient: Crime Writers Association Award. 1957, 1966; Mystery Writers of America Ed gar Allan Poe Award, 1961.1973. and Grand Master Award, 1982; Swedish Academy of Detection Grand Master Diploma, 1977. Fellow. Royal Society of Literature, 1975.
