Synopsis
He was a tall man, and stooped. His hands were pulled down to the level of his knees by the weight of the suitcases he was carrying, while under one arm he gripped a violin. He had a blot of a nose, a wide mouth, and a turnipy kind of tufty hair at the back of his lumpy head. His body was the shape of a fly's. He wore a flapping black suit with a week's mail bulging out of the pockets, thick spectacles, and no hat. He was still pulling himself together on the pavement when the bus, having waited in vain for passengers, started downhill toward the darkening fields. Mr. Bogle crossed the road to speak to the loitering men, but at that moment the Nag's Head opened and they began pushing inside. However, he caught up with someone at the back to ask the way. He had a scrap of paper with an address written on it. The man he had chosen to help him looked at it impatiently. "You got off too soon," he said. tllf you had stayed on, it would have taken you past the gate." And they both glanced over the surrounding country, where in the distance the traveling bus could still be traced, like glittering jewelry being drawn away. "Take that road, you can't miss it. It's the only wood round here." And he hurried after his mates.
