Further Information
John Dickson Carr was, an remains, one of the
most important authors in the genre. A prolific output but
consistently high standards, excellent characters and superb
plotting. He is regarded as the leading exponent of the Locked
Room mystery when the detective is given a seemingly impossible
crime to solve. His two great series detectives were Dr Gideon
Fell, a former teacher and Sir Henry Merrivale, usually referred
to as HM, who was a former Military Intelligence Officer. John
Dickson Carr wrote under several pseudonyms, all listed to the
left, generally speaking US editions tend to precede the UK
books and there are several alternate titles.
