His sudden death caused the local Inspector much anxious thought and this was not lessened by a complete absence of clues. Curiously, however, the Rev. Dodd, vicar of the parish, having for years steeped himself in detective fiction was the means of saving the situation. Putting his theoretical knowledge into practice, he disentangled the complicated skein with such dexterity that if he sent one man to the gallows he at least added a convert to his congregation.
