UNTIL the vicarage car knocked her down and narrowly avoided running her over, she was a perfectly normal girl. It was a shrill March day when, with two girls from her school, she got off the bus as usual and walked up the mile-long straight road which led to her home. How the vicar could have avoided seeing them, the two girls walking slowly in front and Rita a few yards behind on the grass verge, nobody could understand, least of all himself. " I didn't see them," he said many times. But it wasn't possible because he always seemed to see more with his one eye than many people with two. When pressed he said well, perhaps he had seen them but it didn't register, and that everyone found acceptable. Later, when it was known that Rita was neither dead nor maimed for life, the vicar remembered that his last thought before the collision had been one of pleasure that the rooks were building high in the tall trees over the Manor drive. " I must have been looking at the rooks," he decided, " so charming! The mothers on their eggs and the fathers on guard alongside the nest." But by that time nobody cared. |
