UNTIL the vicarage car knocked her down and narrowly avoided running her over, she was a perfectly normal girl. It was a shrill March day when, with two girls from her school, she got off the bus as usual and walked up the mile-long straight road which led to her home. How the vicar could have avoided seeing them, the two girls walking slowly in front and Rita a few yards behind on the grass verge, nobody could understand, least of all himself.
