Joan Aiken, born in Sussex, England 4 September 1924, was the duaghter of the writer Conrad Aiken. The bulk of her work was not mystery based, most was for children plus sevral adult novels of a non-criminous nature. Her greatest strength is the credibility and humanity of her characters, though she cuts a fine balance with the plot lines and the need to move them on. Most agree that her work progressed in quality after the first two or three books, presumably as she got into her stride. She passed away in 2004 leaving a legacy of close to one hundred books. Whilst principally remembered for her young adult books, she was a superior crime fiction author. |
