Maybe she didn't sleep well that night, or maybe she slept so good she just couldn't help getting up early. I blinked my eyes open, shocked into, wakefulness by her sharp, cutting voice. She was framed in the doorway, fully dressed, wide awake and her blue eyes drilling into me from her white face. She said curtly, contemptuously : "Get up and be quick about it." I yawned .and stretched myself. "Don't lie around," she snapped. "We've got work to do. Get up." I eyed her furiously, then realised the best way to take her down a peg was to obey her order exactly. I flung back the coverlet and swung my legs around off the bed. She gave a frightened squeal and scuttled back into her own bedroom like she had been jabbed with a red-hot needle. But even that minor victory did nothing to ease my bad humour. I padded across to the bathroom, shivering slightly in the cold morning air, stepped straight under the shower and turned the faucet. I always sleep raw. It has the double advantage of allowing your body to breathe through every pore while you're sleeping, and enabling you to stagger, half-drunk with sleep, to the shower and jolt yourself into wakefulness. I set the shower for tepid; cold enough to needle me into wakefulness but not so cold as to be unpleasant. I towelled briskly, shaved, padded back into the bedroom and crossed to my clothes. |
