Gladys Mitchell - The Characters
Mrs Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley
Dame Beatrice Bradley is in charge of a psychiatric clinic and is the psychiatric consultant to the British Home Office. She likes traveling, walking (generally at a brisk pace), and also is a devoted scholar of the Sherlock Holmes Canon, which involves her in a murder. She also engages in scholarly research in her family history, particularly one ancestor; Mary Toadfax, a reputed seventeenth-century witch. Intelligence and perception are Mrs. Bradley's strong points; her looks fall a bit short. She is quite masculine and dresses in a decidedly old-fashioned manner (she uses a motor-veil when driving}. Her hand has been described as claw-like. She has black hair and "black eyes as bright as a bird's."
