Evan Hunter has written an imposing body of popular fiction under his own name, but mystery fans know him best as Ed McBain. the author of the 87th Precinct stories, which is (he longest, the most varied, and by all odds the most popular police procedural series in the world. According to the disclaimer page at the front of each volume, the 87th Precinct is located in an "imaginary city." but most readers will quickly catch on that the setting is New York with names of areas and localities changed. The "city," for example, is composed of five boroughs: Isola (Manhattan), where the 87th is located; Riverhead (the Bronx); Majesta (Queens); Calm's Point (Brooklyn); and Bethtown (Staten Island). The reader may be puzzled by the fact [hat the two big rivers, the Harb and the Oix (the Hudson and East River) flow in a westerly direction although the "city" is located on the east coast, until he realizes that the "city" is New York rolled over on its side, so that north becomes east, east becomes south, and so on around the compass. The 87th Precinct is particularly well situated for the commission of upper- , middle- , and lower-class crimes. Within its borders are located at least one expensive high-rise apartment area, an affluent suburb, several large middle-income neighborhoods, blocks upon blocks of festering slums, a red-light district, and even a convenient number of old gothic mansions.
