Charlie Chan The famous Hawaiian detectiveof Chinese origin, Charlie Chan, is quite fat but walks with light, graceful steps. His cheeks are as round as a baby's, his skin is ivory, his amber eyes are slanted, and his black hair is close-cropped. Charlie, his wife and eleven honorable children live on Honolulu's Punchbowl Hill. His dress is Americanized but his speech retains many Oriental patterns. He is especially fond of appropriate aphorisms, such as, "Mind like parachute - onJy function when open;" "When money talks, few are deaf." |
