The characters—the whore who brings shame to her bull-fighter son, the sadistic chief of police, the gypsies with whom Johnny takes refuge —are live human beings far removed from the stock figures of much crime fiction. And scenes such as the Good Friday procession, and the bullfight with which the book ends, are redolent of the Spain which the author knows so well.

Brief Biography
DOUGLAS SANDERSON was born on August 20th, 1920, in Beltinge, Kent. He has served in the Merchant Navy and the R.A.F. In 1947 he emigrated to Canada and is now a Canadian citizen, though he is at present living in Spain. He has travelled widely and particularly likes canoeing, sailing, skiing, house-decorating, classical music, the Italian kitchen, the Spanish people, the English countryside, and the Mediterranean.
