Lord Peter Wimsey
In 1890, Peter was born to Mortimer Gerald Bredon Wimsey, 15th Duke of Denver, and his wife, Honoria. The boy was educated at Eton and Balliol College, taking 1st class honors in modern history, in 1912. He also acquired affectations, an exaggerated Oxford manner, and a monocle. At this time, love and World War I came into Lord Peter Wimsey's life. He had planned to marry but he was about to enter the army, and felt it would be unfair to a wife if he came back from the war mutilated. When he returned to
England on leave in 1916, he found the girl he foved had married another.
He returned to the war and recklessly earned the Distinguished Service Order. He also nearly lost his life behind German lines. His experiences left him with what was then called "a nervous breakdown." He recovered and moved into a London flat There he pursued his interests in history, bibliophily, cricket, music (the piano and campanology), and criminology.
In 1935, he married mystery writer Harriet Vane. A son, Bredon Delagardie Peter, was born to the couple the following year, and later they had twins. Lord Peter is attended by the ultimate valet, Bunter
Less well-known than Lord Peter Wimsey but an astute thinker in his own right, Montague Egg is a mild-mannered commercial traveler. He is always ready with a bit of doggerel from "The Salesman's Handbook," or with the solution to the crimes that come his way.
