It looked out of place, and was. Most of the cars and pickup trucks on Havmeyer Street in Greenport had a new, polished look to them; the black Volks van had been recently re-finished, but with an uneven coat of paint that only accentuated how old it was. Inside, the Volks looked even more dilapidated. The floor in the van's rear was of stained, slatted wood, and running around both of its sides at about eye-level were rows of rusted meat-hooks. This unpromising area was separated from the driver's compartment by a thick wall pierced by a small sliding door on the right-hand side, a reminder that at one time the truck had been refrigerated. The van, when its paint was new and its original owner hopeful, had apparently been used to deliver large cuts of meat. For a long time, the Volks sat parked, both front and rear right wheels against the curb, while its driver alternately stared off into space or looked up the street to where the garish blue-white light of a small delicatessen threw a patchwork of shadows onto the evening pavement. At 8:17, the driver's head snapped up; one of his hands rapped against the sliding door to the rear compartment. The door opened slightly and the dim shadow of a face appeared, its eyes following the driver's. Fifteen-year-old Angel Sanchez, his shift at the family delicatessen done for another day, walked briskly out of the store. Through the large plate-glass window, he saw his mother waving to him and returned the gesture, then turned to start up the hill, beginning the long walk to his home in the town's poorer section. |
