Synopsis
About the book - Sample .. .
Patrick's dreams plagued him. In his dreams he was a boy, ten years ago when his family had lived in London. His mother, alive, rushed ahead of him, her legs in jeans scissoring along, the rubber soles of her tennis shoes making sucking sounds against the pavement slabs. He tried to keep up, but his short legs made him stumble. 'Mommy, stop!' he screamed, but she didn't listen. She hurried away until, like a cartoon, she fell under the horizon and disappeared. He sat down on the strange pavements of a strange city, lost and crying, while English strangers walked by. Far away he heard her calling, as if they were playing hide-and-seek: 'Come find me! You have to find me!' At the sound of her voice he turned back into his young-man self. Then he'dbe in their Victorian house in north London trying to scramble out of the loo window, his bulky shoulders stuck, trying to wriggle and push himself through, trying to catch his mother leaving through the garden gate, her back always turned towards him, even her smell slipping away from him. Patrick wanted to understand his dreams. He had to make them stop.
