Synopsis
As SOON AS she opened the door she knew that it was Friday. She took a comb from her pocket and tidied her hair before the mirror, then she opened the paper, looking neither at the headlines nor the pictures. On page six were the marriage advertisements. Two columns— the left one reserved for single women looking for an affinity, the right one for men in search of a companion to share their loneliness. . . . This was the column that interested Hilde. Every week for years she had eagerly studied this column, awaiting her opportunity. As far as she was concerned romance and sentiment did not enter the picture. The inconsolable widower with a family on his hands, the shy young man or even the well-to-do tradesman left her cold. It was of no possible interest
