He has been hugely successful in his own country and now the translated novels a proving to be popular with both readers and collectors worldwide. Praise for THE WINTER QUEEN, the first Erast Fandorin thriller: 'The Russian lan Fleming . . . Akunin's accomplished writing is a treat. Ruth Rendell 'THE WINTER QUEEN has echoes of the plots of the nineteenth-century
classics all Russians know: duels, reckless gambling, superfluous men and
mysterious beauties whose salons are full of despairing admirers.'
'Extraordinarily readable, full of incident and excitement, swift-moving,
at times hilariously funny, and told with a sparkling light-heartedness which
is impossible to resist . . . English readers have had to wait too long
for Akunin. They have a treat in store. 'A highly talented writer . . . hjs clever interweaving of literary allusions
and jokey elaborations on nineteenth-century literary themes give his
novels a broader set of references than most crime writing.'
'A quirky confection of humour and light-hearted nostalgia, in the
form of an off-the-wall historical whodunit . . . Anyone looking for
a completely new detective genre will find one here.'
'It is all written with splendid style, panache, inventiveness,
humour and self-awareness, and it is no wonder that Akunin's novels,
featuring this hero, have been a huge success in Russia.
They are perfect examples of escapist literature.' |
