Synopsis
DURING the war Mr Pendlebmy had become an enthusiastic Air-Raid Warden in the little Berkshire town where he lived. He rarely went to London, but his friend. Inspector Wagstafte of Scotland Yard, had stayed at Five Oaks, and through him Mr Pcndlebury had met Major Bingley, the Chief Constable, But no crime ever happened in Stutlerf'ord that called for Mr Pendlebury's eareful and persevering genius to solve.
Then, one hot Saturday in June, Mr Pendlebury was disturbed to hear of the sudden death of a neighbour. Mr Joseph Kendrick, on his eightieth birthday. The same evening Major Bingley told him of the murder of Mr Bancroft, the solicitor, and invited Mr Pendlebury to go along for the preliminary investigations. During Sunday he assisted the police in their examination of the late solicitor's papers. On Monday they heard that Mr Kendrick had not died a natural death. With two murders to be investigated, the Chief Constable was a very worried man, and only too glad of Mr Pendlebury"s co-operation. From details such as entries in a pass-hook, a photograph in a grocer's window, a tobacco tin, and some new fuse-wire, Mr Pendlebury gradually built up h'is theory in his roundabout yet workmanlike manner, and presented a complete solution to a grateful Chief Constable.

Synopsis
It's hot! " John Kendrick moved away from the corner seat in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the fierce glare of the early afternoon sun. His brother smiled. " It's no good. I've got the only relatively cool place in the carriage. Trust me for that ! " " Not so much of the old campaigner stuff ! " returned John good-humouredly. " Living in Harrow is hardly my idea of roughing it in the wide open spaces, anyway." " Perhaps not. Still, it's a bit more rustic than a flat in Baron's Court. And a darned sight more comfortable ! I can't understand why you put up with it. Trying to sleep in town in weather like this would make me feel like a ball of wet wool." John glanced from his own none too smart clothes to Peter's well-cared-for suit and grinned, suddenly looking, as a result, about twenty years younger. " I can't imagine that," he said, with mock gravity. Then he stretched himself—there were only the two of them in the stifling- compartment—and yawned prodigiously. " Well, if Uncle Joseph must throw a party on his eightieth birthday he's chosen a fine day for it." "Yes," agreed Peter. "And it's lucky it fell on a Saturday. I should have had no end of a job to get away otherwise." " What ! From a Government Department ? "
