THE DECAYING WALLS OF THE OLD SCOTCH MANSION, MERCIFULLY shrouded by ivy, seemed to tremble under the violent ringing of the ancient door-bell. Raucous peals bellowed through the gloom of twisted passages below stairs, and with gathering echoes swirled into the bedroom of the weary young doctor, deep in a much deserved sleep. He stirred stupidly, and then, as the familiar summons penetrated his consciousness, he jumped out of bed and dressed with the rapidity of one accustomed to hasty rising. A few minutes later, in the raw, sullen dawn of a misty November morning, Rodney Stalland, M.D., opened the heavy, gloomy front door, and for the first time in his life beheld Laura Rowcroft Her lovely young eyes were dark and deep as purple wood-violets. She wore no hat, and her black hair, sleek as a raven's wing, had been hastily plaited, caught up, and pinned at the nape of a white and slender neck. Entirely new and strange emotions throbbed through Stalland's heart in those first few seconds of the meeting. Then the girl spoke, breathlessly, as though she had been running hard. "Are you the doctor ?" she asked. "Yes," he replied, quickly returning to earth. "I—I'm from the old tenements over the shops." She paused a moment to recover her breath. "There's a girl lodging next to me and—and the baby's expected any minute. We're both up in the garrets! You'd better hurry, I think." |
