A Superintendent Andrew Creighton novel and surely a bargain !
Rowland Griff, Headmaster of St Clouds boarding school for boys in Dorset, lies on the floor of his study. His throat has been cut. Griff's ancient parrot, Hamlet, gazes down at the gathering pool of blood. 'Who's a pretty boy then?' he squawks. While GrifFs murder is being investigated by the local CID, Superintendent Andrew Creighton briefs undercover officer Daniel Boyd in London. Shortly before the murder Gaby Darrington, Head of English at St Clouds, approached Swanage CID, alleging that one of her students had been assaulted by an army officer. The boy withdrew his allegations and refused to cooperate: he has a history of crying wolf. Nevertheless, there are rumours that a pederast ring is operating from an army base in Dorset and Creighton is concerned.

What have you been up to?' asked Creighton. 'Nothing much/ replied Boyd. 'Any easier?' He shrugged. 'Do you want to work?' I'll go out of my mind if I don't. Every time the phone rings I've been praying I'd hear your voice.' 'You make me feel like God.' 'As far as I'm concerned you are God. You can change me -with your mighty word. Maybe you're a magician after all - a magician on the darker side, of course.' Boyd realised he was babbling on, but often he didn't speak to anyone for days at a time. They were sitting in Creighton's New Scotland Yard office on a battered black plastic sofa. In front of them was an equally battered black coffee table on which rested two mugs of mauvish-grey liquid. Neither had been touched.
